Follow the real Laura Ingalls and her family as they make their way west—and discover that truth is as remarkable as fiction.

Hidden away since 1930, Laura Ingalls Wilder’s original autobiography reveals the true stories of her pioneering life. Some of her experiences will be familiar; some will be a surprise. Pioneer Girl: The Annotated Autobiography re-introduces readers to the woman who defined the pioneer experience for millions of people around the world.

Wilder details the Ingalls family’s journey through Kansas, Missouri, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, back to Minnesota, and on to Dakota Territory— sixteen years of travels, unforgettable stories, and the everyday people who became immortal through her fiction. Using additional manuscripts, diaries, and letters, editor Pamela Smith Hill adds valuable context and explores Wilder’s growth as a writer.

Pioneer Girl: The Annotated Autobiography also explores the history of the frontier that the Ingalls family traversed and the culture and life of the communities Wilder lived in. The book features over one hundred images, eight fully researched maps, and hundreds of annotations based on census data and records, newspapers of the period, and other primary documents.

Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote her autobiography, Pioneer Girl, in 1929―1930 when she was in her early sixties.  Throughout the 1930s and into the early 1940s, Wilder utilized her original manuscript to write a successful children’s series. She died in Mansfield, Missouri, at ninety years of age on February 10, 1957.

    • Hi, Tamara – please pardon our delayed response. Our current projection is November, so if you’re planning for Christmas, Pioneer Girl might be a suitable gift for anyone (or everyone) on your list.

    • Thank you for your question. Along with making Wilder’s unpublished memoir widely available for the first time, Pioneer Girl: The Annotated Autobiography will add valuable context through photographs, annotations, maps, and appendices. We do have plans for an eBook version of Pioneer Girl in the future, but creating an eBook will require restructuring, so we will probably not be releasing a digital format at the same time as the print version.

    • Hi, Ellen. Orders to Canada will be processed in the same way as U.S. orders, although shipping will be a bit more expensive. You can use this page to order the book. Thanks for bringing this up.

  1. This is very exciting! Laura ingalls wilder turned me into a wannabe historian at 9, when I read everything I could get my hands on about her in the early 1980s–I’m actually a real historian now, and I’m thrilled to find out about your book. A bit jealous of the lucky people who were involved in the research— but really looking forward to this.

  2. I second that! I’ve been following your website for a looongg time now eagerly awaiting completion of this book and envious that people out there are spending their days researching and compiling. Thank you for taking the time to provide us all with your fascinating findings, I’ll preorder straight away.

  3. Do you have a list if booksellers that will be carrying the book? I would love to support our local bookstore and purchase the work through them.

    • Thank you for your question Lisa. Pioneer Girl: The Annotated Autobiography is available through your local retailers, if they order it. I suggest speaking with your bookstore to ensure that it will be available through them. They can contact us by emailing orders@sdshspress.com or by calling 605-773-6009.

  4. How much longer am I to hold my excitement in until I will receive my book? I just pre ordered it a few minutes ago.

  5. Not sure if this is the place to do it or not, but I just had to post my feelings about “Pioneer Girl” so far. Got it in the mail the other day and I cannot put it down and have devoured most of it already! I have heard about this autobiography all my life that I read would probably never be published, so I am ecstatic to finally get to read Laura’s real story in her own words. It is like having Laura, herself, telling me all the old stories Pa used to tell her as a little girl. This book leaves no doubt in my mind that it is Laura who had the talent and the creativity to make her stories believable and come to life. These stories fill in so many gaps that I have wondered about for years and the annotations are simply amazing. In my mind, I feel complete, now that I have this book, knowing all there is to know about this remarkable woman. Pamela Smith Hill and all the editors have done an outstanding job with explaining and expanding upon the smallest details. Together it is a masterpiece and I thank everyone involved who made this possible. For me, it is the crown jewel in my Little House collection!

  6. Hello All,
I would love to buy a copy of this book, but as I live in Wales, UK, I’m not sure if this is even possible? Do you post outside of the USA/Canada?

    • Hello Jodi, thank you for your question. At this time we do not have a large print edition. We have not set a date for the eventual release of an eBook version of Pioneer Girl, but, when produced, larger print will be an available function.
